Frequently asked questions
RTD vs MPVI
An RTD ("Remote Tuning Device") is the right choice for most customers.
The newest generation RTD4 is the only model of RTD we sell, and is included with all Tuning Packages.
Device and TDN App compatibility, which is required for most platforms, varies by vehicle year/make/model - e.g., the 2025 Explorer is only compatible with RTD4 or MPVI4 for use with the TDN App, and with MPVI3 for use with VCM Suite Beta ("laptop method").
The RTD4 and MPVI4 are the only models capable of WiFi data transfer, which is faster than previous-generation bluetooth data transfer for wireless connections.
An MPVI is more advanced in terms of its ability to read/write data from vehicles, which is only relevant to tuners and customers who would like to write their own tunes.
In terms of functionality with ZFGR Tunes, these devices are equally capable as one another, and will provide the same end-results. Both devices support data logging via laptop/VCM Scanner if desired.
Please note: All ZFGR tunes will be locked and you will not be able to read or edit them regardless of which tuning device you have. There are no exceptions to this rule.
We only support HP Tuners devices. Compatibility of each HP Tuners device varies by vehicle year/make/model, device type & generation, and your mobile phone's operating system (iOS or Android).
If HP Tuners recently released support for your vehicle
(e.g., 2025 Explorer, Bronco, Bronco Raptor, Ranger, Ranger Raptor, 2023+ F150, etc.):
MPVI3, MPVI4, or RTD4 are the only compatible devices, regardless of your mobile phone.
RTD4 supports reading & flashing via TDN only; Data logging is supported via TDN App or laptop.
MPVI3 supports reading & flashing via laptop only; Data logging is supported via TDN App or laptop.
MPVI4 support for reading, flashing & data logging is expected for TDN App & Laptop.
For customers with other vehicles (pre-2023 F150, Explorer, Edge, etc.):
We recommend the RTD for most customers. For more information on recommended tuning devices, please see "Which tuning device do you recommend?"
As always, please contact us directly with any questions - Sales@tunedbyzfgracing.com
Please Note: Laptop logging is supported for all vehicles, but support for laptop flashing varies. Please review our compatibility guide to ensure that your device is TDN-compatible. If your device is not listed as TDN-compatible, please contact us to verify that laptop flashing is approved for your platform.
Please take note of the following:
Purchase your first tune - Select "Tune only - I already have a compatible device" from the first drop-down option on the tune purchase page (Select platform > Initial Tune).
"Tune Only" does not include credits - you can purchase credits at this link (requires device serial number, found next to "S/N" on the back of your device).
To determine how many credits are needed - please reference the Tuning Device drop-down on the tune purchase page (e.g., Add ZFGR RTD w/4 Credits = 4 credits needed).
Your tune will NOT be sent automatically - once your purchase is complete, you must read your stock file to the TDN and submit a TDN Request on our website.
The required steps and how to move forward are outlined on page 10-17 of our Tuning Guide, and in our Quick Start Guide.
You may receive a notification that your order has shipped; this is an automated email and does not apply to tune-only purchases.
"Additional Tunes" can be purchased after you have purchased an initial tune - to cover additional fuel types or tuning goals, please view Additional Tunes (Select platform > Additional Tunes).
Yes, all you need to do is add the required number of credits for the additional vehicle.
