Maintenance & Prep
Is a break-in period required before tuning?
No. Your tune works the same no matter how many miles are on the vehicle.
That said, it's important to make sure everything works the way it should before you tune or add aftermarket parts. Starting from a verified baseline means fewer things to rule out if a problem comes up later.
Troubleshooting Tips:
Many owners wait until 1,000 miles or the first oil change (around 2,500 miles), but it's up to you. There's no deadline to start tuning and we're happy to work at your pace.

Does my Explorer have a GPF?
Certain 2025+ Explorer ST vehicles may be equipped with a Gasoline Particulate Filter (GPF). While this seems to be present on *most* 2026 models, we have seen some 2026 Explorers that are NOT GPF-equipped.
To determine whether your vehicle has a GPF, please review the emissions sticker located under the hood. If "GPF" is listed on the emissions label, certain exhaust components or systems may not be compatible with your vehicle. Please see the photo below for reference.
Troubleshooting Tips:
Please note that ZFG Racing does not provide guidance, support, tuning, calibration changes, or assistance related to the modification, removal, alteration, circumvention, or suppression of OEM-equipped GPF systems or any other emissions-related equipment.

How do I tune my vehicle with ZFG Racing once I receive my device?
Getting started is simple.
To ensure no steps are missed, please follow our TDN Quick Start Guide in Tuning Central (linked below).
Once your tuning device arrives, you'll:
1. Install the TDN App and set up your tuning device
2. Connect the device and read your vehicle's factory calibration.
3. Submit the required vehicle information through our calibration portal (Tuning Central).
4. Our calibration team will review your submission and build your custom tune.
Once complete, you'll receive tune files through the TDN App along with instructions for data logging the latest revision.
Additional revisions may be provided as needed based on datalog review and vehicle modifications.
Troubleshooting Tips:
If you encounter a read vehicle error, follow the steps under "Additional Steps for Read Vehicle Errors." This is normal in some cases and just means we need additional data.

Can I return my vehicle to stock?
Yes. Using your HP Tuners device, you can flash your vehicle back to its original stock calibration at any time.
Many customers choose to return the vehicle to stock temporarily for troubleshooting, dealership visits, or before selling the vehicle.
Returning the vehicle to stock does not delete your custom tune files, and you may reapply your tune later as needed.
Troubleshooting Tips:
Your Stock file is called "Restore" in the TDN App.
It's important that this file is not deleted, as it may not be replaceable.

Do I need an intercooler before tuning?
Not necessarily. Most vehicles can be tuned safely using the factory intercooler, and many customers choose to tune before performing additional modifications. However, upgraded intercoolers can help reduce intake air temperatures, improve consistency during repeated acceleration, and support more aggressive driving conditions. For customers planning multiple modifications, tuning is often the recommended first step.

What spark plugs should I run?
For most tuned Ford and Lincoln EcoBoost vehicles, we recommend NGK LTR7BHX spark plugs (95605) gapped to 0.028". For heavily modified applications, including many big turbo setups, a 0.026" gap may be more appropriate. Always verify spark plug gap before installation, and we recommend using a feeler gauge for the most accurate measurement.
Troubleshooting Tips:
Always check gap using the proper tools (feeler gauge). Measurements taken using other methods may result in different outcomes.

What maintenance should I follow after getting tuned?
Proper maintenance is key to ensuring your vehicle runs safely, reliably, and performs at its best with your custom tune.
We recommend staying on top of the following:
• Engine oil: Check regularly and run ~0.5 quart over (especially if launching or driving aggressively)
• Service intervals: Shorten intervals and stay ahead of routine maintenance
• Fluids: Check levels consistently and adjust as needed (engine, trans, etc.)
