Does ZFG Recommend Downpipe upgrades?
Aftermarket Part:
Parts Category:
Other Names / Types:
Downpipe
Exhaust System
downpipe, down pipe, down pipes, cats, catalytic converter
The Basics:
Performance Benefits:
Upgraded downpipes allow the turbocharger(s) to spool up faster and maintain more boost than stock downpipes, resulting in increased power output and better overall engine performance. This upgrade also provides a more responsive and powerful driving experience.
Enhanced Exhaust Flow and Reduced EGTs: High flow cats are designed to allow exhaust gases to pass from the engine and turbos more freely compared to stock catalytic converters, resulting in a reduction of backpressure and a
reduction in exhaust gas temperatures (EGTs).
Better Flow = Faster Spool = More Boost:Reduction of EGTs and decreased backpressure allows turbocharger(s) to operate more efficiently in terms of spool time and building boost.
Recommended Modifications & Tune-Related Impact:
Recommended vs Required:
Upgrading the downpipe(s) is not required for tuning.
We recommend this upgrade for customers who have already installed an intercooler and both intakes.
This modification will support maximum gains from tuning and any future modifications, like upgraded turbos.
This upgrade does not require a tune.
Adding this upgrade to a tuned vehicle does not require a tune update.
How it Works:
Catalytic Converter Cell Counts:
OEM Catalytic Converters: Most OEM converters use a cell count ranging from 600 to 900 cells per square inch (CPSI).
Aftermarket Catted Downpipes: Aftermarket options, such as those from SPD, CVFab, cP-e, Kooks, MagnaFlow, etc., often use a 400-600 Cell Cat. These downpipes include approved federal catalytic converters, ensuring they meet emissions standards while providing performance gains.
GESI Cats:
GESI Catalytic Converters: GESI (Global Emissions Systems Inc.) cats are known for their high-quality construction and effectiveness in reducing emissions. They are designed to meet stringent emissions standards while maintaining performance.
Applications: GESI cats are often used in high-performance and racing applications where emissions compliance is still required.
Tuning Requirements:
Catted Downpipes for Tuning: We require catted downpipes for tuning.
Additional Notes:
3-Inch Downpipes: For some models, we offer 3-inch downpipes which can provide better airflow and performance compared to smaller diameters.
Coating Options: Some customers opt for ceramic coating on their downpipes to help manage heat and protect the engine.
Explorer-Specific Recommendations:
F150-Specific Recommendations:
Some of the turbo upgrades for this platform require turbo adapter(s). There are downpipes available that incorporate the flange for upgraded turbos, and eliminate the need for adapters (e.g., SPD Downpipes).
